About
THE RAS-TOOLS PROJECT
BACKGROUND
Recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) is a growing industry on a global scale. To furter develop RAS as a sustainable industry we need more knowledge about RAS system dynamics. In the RAS-TOOLS we study RAS systems using a systems biology approach involving: Dynamic Modeling, Microbiome Analyses, Chemical Analyses, and Fish Health Monitoring.
MAIN GOALS
- Better understand the dynamics of the production of off-flavor compounds.
- Better understand microbiome dynamics in terms of microbiome composition and activity
- Better understand systems responses to variations in alkalinity and pH.
- Develop a novel toolbox for monitoring and control of RAS microbiomes.
- Reveal new biosignatures for early detection of non-optimal operational conditions.
- Contribute to the development of a sustainable RAS industry.
WORK PACKAGES (WPs)
RAS-TOOLS is organized into seven WPs:
- WP1 – Management
- WP2 – Communication and Dissemination
- WP3 – RAS Experiments and Sampling
- WP4 – Microbial Metabolites
- WP5 – Microbiome Composition
- WP6 – Microbiome Activity
- WP7 – Modelling and Simulation
STUDENTS
Currently, one PhD student (Marie Montjouridès; UiB) and one MSc student (Olina Skora; UiB) is working in the RAS-TOOLS project. We are looking for MSc students with a background in dynamic modeling, microbiome analyses, bioinformatics, or water chemistry analyses.
